I started playing this game again in July of this year and more than doubled my time and number of armor sets in the game as I got into high level GQ farming. By the time I've done all that, he's back up anyway, and then I can't hit him for another couple minutes, until my shield charge is up. I spend the entire time refilling my phials/charging my shield. Maybe that's just my luck, or whatever, and it's not-quite-right, but even so, if I knock him out of the air and finally can land a hit on him. So I flash bang him, and even though he's definitely facing the bomb, it doesn't work reliably for me. He just sits in the air where it's impossible to reach him because the only part in reach are his feet and tail, where the former are protected by the wind barrier and the latter is constantly whipping all over the place.
My problem is that 90% of the time Kushala decides to never let me land a hit on him, which prevents me from poisoning or breaking anything. I've tried looking for info about this, but I can't find anything save for the standard "Break his horn" "Poison him".
